Glen Scotia "The Mermaid " 12 Years Aged Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky - 70cl
This is the first in the Glen Scotia distillery's Icons of Campbeltown series.
Inspired by a medieval carving of a mermaid in the market cross area of Campbeltown itself, or ‘wee toon’ as it is known by local inhabitants.
The whisky itself is a 12 year old unpeated single malt that began maturing in ex-bourbon casks and was then finished in palo cortado sherry casks.
This pale dry sherry (similar to amontillado) doesn't have the same impact as an oloroso would have on the characteristics of the spirit and is an interesting choice.
On the nose, there's toffee, cinnamon and orange peel with some maritime salt. On tasting, there's further saltiness along with a sweet and nutty sherry finish.
